My Dad. My WWII hero.

This isn't the best pic of my Dad, but I like it because it looks like it was taken outside his parents' home in Detroit. The second two are scans of a postcard my Dad sent home in 1944. I know he shipped off from San Diego, so I wonder if this is his first postcard from the war to home.

According Wiki, the Battleship Idaho used to visit Navy yards up and down the CA coast, including Puget Sound, San Francisco (before they kicked the Navy out) and San Diego. I think her home port was Pearl though. Idaho was in Bremington once for repairs and also to be refitted for new guns. She did sail from San Diego on her historic spring of '45 tour, probably to pick up marines.

So cool that you have all those memorabilia. My father wrote his mother frequently when he was drafted and sent to Germany in the early 50's. She saved every one of his letters. I knew nothing about the letters and postcards until after she died two years after my dad. One day my aunt, executor of my grandma's things, sent me a big envelope with all of my father's letters. I spent a lot of spare time typing them up and making a booklet out of them which I shared with relatives. His letters are a bit odd to read, rather like a one-sided Twitter feed (he didn't save the letters his mother wrote), but still, I'll cherish them because that's all I have of him from that time.

Is it me, or does his post card seems to be conveying a secret message. What is "it"?
